Small Goodbyes That Surprise Us

Some goodbyes hit hard and you feel them right away. Others sneak up quietly, almost without warning. Like finishing a show you really love or realizing a habit you’ve had forever isn’t really a part of your life anymore. They’re small but somehow they hit anyway.

Like right now, I’m reading a series that I absolutely love. But I haven’t started the last book yet. I just… can’t. Part of me wants to skip ahead and get it over with. Part of me wants to stay in the story forever. I know that once I finish it, it’ll be over. The characters I’ve been living with for months won’t be there anymore. It’s silly, I know, but even thinking about it makes my chest feel a little tight.

I felt the same way when I finished my favorite TV show, The Office, for the first time. I’d been watching it almost every night and it kind of felt like hanging out with friends. When the last episode ended, I sat back on the couch, stared at the screen and didn’t know what to do next. I didn’t want it to be over. Something so small — a show! — made me feel empty in a way I didn’t expect.

Small goodbyes happen all the time, but we hardly notice them. Like finishing a book, leaving a cafe you like or realizing your morning routine is changing. Tiny shifts like that can feel weird. You suddenly notice how attached you were to things that were just part of your day. And then they’re gone.

Sometimes it’s a habit too. Maybe you stop scrolling on your phone at night or you don’t check Instagram first thing in the morning anymore. You know it’s probably better for you, but at first it feels… empty. Like something’s missing. And that’s okay. It just means you cared about it.

When these small endings happen, it helps to pause. Really notice them. Take a breath. Maybe even whisper to yourself, “That was nice while it lasted.” It doesn’t have to be dramatic. It’s just about giving a little nod to the things that made your day a bit better, even if only for a while.

I keep thinking about my book. I know I’ll read the last one eventually. I’ll probably feel a little sad when I do. But I’ll also be glad I got to enjoy the story at all. And after that? There’s always something else waiting. Maybe a new book, maybe a new show, maybe just a new part of my day I’ll start looking forward to.

That’s what small goodbyes do — they remind us that life is always moving, even if it’s just in tiny ways. And feeling something for them, even if it’s small, is kind of nice. It shows we notice life. That we care.

So next time you finish a show, a book, or just notice part of your day quietly changing, take a moment. Smile at it. Say goodbye in your own little way. These small endings are part of growing up, even if they don’t feel like it at the time. And honestly, they make space for new things to come in — things that might surprise you in the best way!
