At Simply Counselling Services, we believe in orienting our services around a core set of values.

Values serve as important guideposts to align our actions, decisions, and behaviours, and ultimately, our services. However, values are just words unless they are defined and enacted.

Here you will find a description of our core values: simplicity, person-centered approach, and innovation. Importantly, we have defined what these values mean to us, and we demonstrate how we live them.

About Simply Counselling

At Simply Counselling Services, we believe in orienting our services around a core set of values. Join Simply counselling founder Jenna and her Education Director/Practicum Student Nicki as they discuss the Simply Counselling philosophy and the stigma of mental health.

Simplicity

This underlying philosophy guides and provides the foundation for the company. Accessibility to our services will be simple, and our communication with you, as a client, or a business partner, will be simple.

How We Define it:

Accessibility

Booking appointments: you can easily book online or by calling our administrative support.

Availability: we offer availability for appointments weekdays, weekends, and evenings.

Finding/Selecting a Counsellor: We have provided a description, biography, and online booking option for all of our counsellors on our main page.

Billing: Our fantastic administrative support is ready and willing to help with all of your payment and billing needs, especially with navigating the insurance system.

Communication

Communicating with clients: Although it is important in some cases (for billing purposes with insurance companies as an example), having a diagnosis is not required or necessary. We believe in keeping our communication with you as a client simple, by using plain language and focusing instead on building a relationship with you.

Communication within our team: We have a diverse team with varied experiences in counselling, however, we all practice the value of simplicity. This means that we like to take the opportunity to consult, collaborate, and use each other’s strengths as much as possible, resulting in better services for you as a client.

Person-Centered Approach

Orienting our approach around the client being the expert guides how we approach our therapy. This puts an emphasis on the relationship between the client and the therapist. The therapist practices from a place of professionalism at all times by adhering to the ethical guidelines of the College of Alberta Psychologists.

How We Define it:

Client is the expert

Believing the client is the expert places the focus of the therapy on your “human experience”. We say this intentionally as we believe that what you bring to the table is more than who you are; it includes all of the complexities of being a human in today’s world, such as navigating relationships, traumatic experiences, environments that we live, work and play in, biological and physical factors (physical health), and spiritual practices and beliefs. The human experience is holistic, and we embrace celebrating and discovering your uniqueness collaboratively.

Professionalism

All of our therapists adhere to and practice the strict and standard ethical practices as outlined by the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP), which means you can expect services that are rooted in confidentiality, a non-judgmental approach, the required level of competence, and the basic values of trust, integrity, and respect.

Innovation

It may seem surprising, but we believe that simplicity, in and of itself, is innovative. We know that life has become incredibly difficult and challenging, making a return to the “simple life” innovative and novel. Having innovation as one of our values also means we believe in creativity and being open to new ways of practicing therapy. This requires open-mindedness, which is practiced by all team members.

How We Define it:

Open-mindedness

Being open to new ideas and ways of doing things requires vulnerability, courage, and humility to accept that things need to change and that we do not always know best. We believe in staying connected to research, professional associations, and other colleagues in the mental health field to ensure we are always delivering services that are up-to-date, research or evidence-based practices, and effective. This means we are also continually pursuing our own professional development as therapists, as we believe our journey as professionals is an ever-evolving one.

Creativity

Innovation requires a level of creativity in how we think, act, and approach our delivery of services. One of the ways we practice this is related to how we reach people. With the introduction and offer of our free podcast, we have been able to reach people in ways we did not believe were possible before. Our social media connection, networking, and various professional and business collaborations, allow us to be creative in how we provide services to you as a client.
